Galatea jumped up and whipped around, stringing her bow and leveling an arrow at the stranger's brow. "Identify yourself, unless you wish to resemble the Fates!"

Bit had just finished relaying the absolute worthlessness of the map fragment when a new voice from their rear surprised him. Instinctively, he drew his silver dagger and whipped around, elegantly tumbling towards the stranger. Ending his roll in a low fighting stance and weapon forward, Bit hissed "You don't look like a sand worm, but this desert is full of surprises. Explain yourself and do not move while doing so." He spit a dust coated glouble into the sand "If you value your extremities."

I am going to hold on an augury until after Baal's appearance is dealt with. Carry on.

"I will withdraw my offer if you prefer, but I think we may be helpful to each other," Baal addressed his interrogators, showing his hands to be empty in a gesture of trust.

"Last warning: your name or your eye!" Galatea demanded, readying her fingers to fire. Her eyes narrowed at the stranger, her nostrils taking in his scent, now that the bile smell had dissipated, which was probably why she didn't notice him before.

Bit lowered, but did not sheath, his dagger. Rising warily, he responded "Stranger, I don't know where you come, or more aptly, came from, but let me offer some advice. Galatea here has a short temper and no concept of pleasantries. If you wish to escape her wrath, not to mention our Dwarven friend's 'accessories' over there, I would suggest you begin speaking, and quickly."

"Don't go stickin' him until ye find out where he keeps his booze. Yer like ter waste it otherwise."

Saskia looked up from her ritual and said to her brother, "I'm trying to speak with the gods here. Tell those fools to shut their mouths."

At the Dwarf's comment Bit smiled and shook his head. "Thorsan, I was weaving a wonderful feeling of danger and you had to go and ruin it." Sheathing his dagger and walking towards the stranger he continued "While the dwarf may not be focused, you'll notice that the she-elf's bow has not wavered. Please, tell us why you are here."

"You offer sage advice Dwarf," Baal lowered his hands slowly. He turned his head towards the elf, addressing her in her native tongue, "My name is of little meaning here, but since I care to keep my eye and my life just how they are, you may call me Baal."

The ritual was complete, the bones tossed. "Both paths, the shortest first. Trust a stranger." Whispered in her ear.

Baal spoke in the common tongue once more, "I am here because I was forced from my home by desert raiders. I had been roaming for days when I came upon your caravan. I saw your release and saw your brief battle with that sand dwelling wurm. I have lived in the desert waste for some years and could be your guide on your journey through the wastes of sand that surround us. In exchange, I had hoped travelling with you all would afford some level of protection."

Her question answered, after a fashion, Saskia rose to her feet. She was less surprised to find a stranger in their midst than she would have been before the ritual. "Enki has vouched for him," she said to her companions. "He will guide us to the pyramid."

"Which way to the pyramid?" Alfbern said, saying the unfamiliar last word carefully. He said to his sister, "I had it all under control."

"Before we begin, I must hear an answer to my offer. Who among you can speak for everyone here?" Baal clasped his hands calmly.
