"Staff of Ruling? I know not of this. Unless that is the Staff they refer to in this tome." He held the the book tighter to his frame as he took a step back. The other Thune slowly started moving towards their interim leader. With one hand he held the symbol of Anu to his heart.
Sounds of men could be heard from the right entrance way.

Osric looked distraught, torn between his rescuers and the new priest before them.
"Stop this nonsense, I beg of you." He looked to Saskia and her brother.
"Anu begat all of our pantheon. He is the very Law that holds everything together. To harm this man and his followers would be a grave mark on our very souls."

"We have harmed no one," Saskia said. "They are the ones scurrying about, drawing blades, preparing to bathe their own temple with blood."

"Indeed," Alfbern said. "We have just asked for information. It is they who make fun of us in their tongue and who grow nervous at simple inquiries."

"Wait, wait!" Arristuun said. "Maybe, if we told you everything, you would understand why we need to go into the pyramid."
The river ranger looked around to see if anyone else was going to volunteer to tell the story for him. He looked at the bard for a good 30 seconds. "Really? Seriously?" he said about the bard's unusual reticence to tell a long tale. "Fine. I'll tell it...
"You see, we were forced into your desert because of some ...unfortunate misunderstandings in our homeland. We looked for safe shelter and stumbled across old ruins. It was while we were searching the old ruins that we accidentally unleashed the evil flaming genie. We tried to kill it, but it got away, and headed in this direction.
"But something else happened while we were chasing the genie. We encountered a ...a ghost, or something, that claimed to be a pharaoh's spirit. It told us of a curse he had put on the land, long ago, that turned it into the desert it is today. He told us that if we could find his Staff of Ruling, we could end the curse.
"So, you see, we have two reasons to enter the pyramid. To see if that's where the genie is hiding, and to look for a staff that could undo the curse on these lands and restore them to what they once were."

"This sounds like a fable."
Twenty some odd more dervishes entered the room, filling the right side of the room. Sounds of even more men came from behind them.
"But perhaps we can speak some more, as violence is only ever our last resort, and maybe, just maybe, my trade tongue is not as strong as I believe. One of you may peruse this tome, but the rest of you need to stay to the walls or the entrance. We have been tricked in the past and I will not have a massacre on my hands if I can help it."

"The tome. The words - are they religious or magical?" Alfbern asked. "Matters for who looks at book."

Arristuun complied and moved to the wall. He was hoping that whoever read the book -- and it wouldn't be him, for the river ranger was not the most literate of men -- would find some clue inside the tome that would convince these dervishes and priests of the veracity of his 'fable'.

"It is a religious tract, while the words within are similar to the trade tongue, it is written in an old style that confuses me."

Arristuun noticed that no one was stepping forward to read the tome. Then a thought occurred to him, and he thought he should share it to end the awkward silence.
"My friends who can work magic can probably read this with a certain spell that they don't have prepared now. If we could be given somewhere to rest, we would be able to decipher the tome in the morning and solve this mystery for all of us."

Alfbern once again approached the old man and motioned for him to set the book down somewhere so Alfbern could read it. He would see if this old man was just a fool or if the book was a true puzzle.

As the tension ratcheted up, Bit realized there was either going to be a pitched battle or an outright slaughter, both of which he wanted no part of if he could help it. Seeing that no one seemed to be paying attention to him, he tried his best to put his back against the nearest wall.

"I will read the book," Saskia proclaimed. She had spells prepared that should aid her effort.
((Read Magic and Comprehend Languages if needed.))

Alfbern yielded to Saskia as he knew she had spells that would make the perusal of the tome easier if it proved difficult. H'rathi stepped to the side as she approached. He set the book down. The cover clearly had the words, The Tome of Amun-re, written in flowing script in gold lettering. As the the old priest opened the cover for her, she realized the old man spoke the truth. Some of the letters and words did not flow to make sense (even though they were in the trade tongue, and it was even worse for her most likely as she grew up in a completely different culture. Sighing, she decided to use a magic to understand the language as the lettering did not seem magical.
She was then able to understand the writing much easier. Saskia then realized that it would take at least the duration of her magic to read the entire work. There were two chapters to pick from in case time ran out: The Book of Amun-re or the Tale of Years.
Which would she chose to read first?

"This will take a while," Saskia said, then she began to read the Book of Amun-re.
