Nobody wanted to question the dwarf, as irritating him often ended in a bloody mess. The party continued on... perhaps a bit longer than estimated. Two and a half hours past as they approached twin pillars of stone rising from the dust. They were slanted at strange angles. Their worn surfaces pockmarked, sand worn and covered in strange runes. The party could tell this from what could be construed as a safe distance, perhaps 30 feet away. They would have to get closer if they had any hope of deciphering the writing. It seemed that their faint trail continued directly through the middle of the columns.

And it was freaking hot. Thorsan was sweating like an addict going cold turkey. Mmm. Turkey.

"Set up the tent," Saskia told her brother. "I'll try to decipher the pillars' secrets."

"The Gates of Sule curse ye who enter unbidden."

An arrow whizzes past Saskia's ear, brushing past the puller before embedding in a tree. An elf aiming a long bow appears and demands Saskia's name and purpose. She seems angry and protective over something in the vicinity but what?

[Kass you've been with the party, just silent up til this point. And you've traveled with the party before. There's also a distinct lack of trees, being a desert.]

"Well, I for one am so glad we decided to visit Sule's domain, whoever he may be" Bit said with just a wee bit of sarcasm. "He, or she, has built quite a land, don't you think?"
(Bit readies his scimitar, just in case"

[[Oh, I thought I was supposed to enter here, misunderstood earlier instructions]] Galatea just watches as everyone else prepares to settle in or ponders the translation. She pulls something from her pocket, a small ring with an almost indecipherable enscription, and slowly runs her thumb on it before putting it back. "Curse", she thinks, stifling a laugh before she starts practicing her swordplay.

[Bob, since they were deposited from their caravan, Baal has been following the party at a roughly 50 yard distance using his ring. Upon approaching the pillars, Baal moves to within 20 yards and continues observing.]

[Does that mean anything to Baal? Religion and local history checks?]

It all seemed very little to get excited about, but Zacklun figured that pillars were preferable to the heat, sand, and random gas erupting from the camels. His interest did perk a bit when he heard "curse". That meant something fun and interesting was ahead. "Phooey! They always say something like that when they want people to stay away. 'Ye shall not enter tha gates lest ye face the curse and wrath of King Puplewup', but what they are really saying is that there is loads of cool stuff that the old king doesn't really need anymore cause he is all dead. Treasure, money, new things for Thorsan to chop up, and who knows what else." His grin was going from ear to ear, hopefully this wasn't any old and boring tower filled with musty and dusty books. Zacklun looked around, "Though, I'm not sure what they are cursing.. the sand? There isn't much else around here.". He had also discovered that camel ass and sand was a decided step down from horse ass and sand. "I think we should definitely look around a bit, perhaps one of us head out a wee bit in each direction? I'll take that direction." he points through the gap made by the two leaning pillars. He slid gracefully down off the camel and got his bow ready with a war arrow. "Lone scouts are better than large groups and if we head out in different directions we can spot more stuff." Zacklun had to occasionally tell himself to use their logic, as dull as it might be, simply saying, 'let us do the thing!', seemed to rarely work.
{if we do head out, Zacklun will move off a short ways to find a decent sized dune to hide behind. Once there he will finger his dagger, turn invis, shape change back to his natural form and will scout from the air using observation. He will then return at the appointed time, again finding a large dune, shape changing into human, and then become visible while fingering his dagger.}

Zacklun made his way to the pillars. Ominous looking things really. It was nice to be in his real body and he savored the feeling of flying again, as he turned a quick aerial somersault in the joy of the moment. Pillars, though. *Sigh* He flew between the two and felt no different. Not like a faerie moot at all. Hmm. The trail kept going beyond the 2 dark columns much the same as they did on the other side of it. Nothing to see here, folks. Nothin' to see. He eventually made his way back to the party.
Baal notices this strange change from visible to invisible with the rogue and figures he must have similar magics to his own. Perhaps with the dagger he carried.

"Much as it surprises me, I agree with Zacklun," Saskia said. "These warnings are feeble, meant to do little more than keep away the simple and the craven."
When people began to leave to scout, she stopped them. "Wait, everyone drink your fill of water and bring me your skins. I know a ritual that can replenish them with pure water. Also throw down any shields you carry or other vessels that might hold some water. The animals must drink as well."
Saskia also wove a spell that would cause an arcane alarm to sound should any invaders enter their camp. When all that was complete, she would retire to her tent and sleep away the day.
