"Ugh, the terrain here is brutal..." Arristuun complained when he got back to anyone in earshot. "We are not going to make fast time to this pyramid. On the bright side, nothing tried to ambush us."

Everyone had to agree that eating, playing a few hands of Tonk and getting their bearings was preferable to being cooped up in a slave wagon for an extended period of time. It soon came down to discussion as to who would take watch that evening and other serious matters, such as when they would pack up and begin their trek. If they decided to leave the following evening, watches would also need to be set during the day.

Alfbern began packing his things and the tent he had put up for him and Saskia to shelter in.
"If we spend a day doing nothing we maybe starve one day from food or water," he said loud enough for everyone to overhear. If no one followed his advice he would start packing up the other tents.

Alfbern had a point. Saskia followed his lead and began packing the few things they had taken out during the brief rest.

"Alfbern, sometimes your strict practicality is advise able. Sometimes." Bit said as threw another losing hand down. Gathering up his blades and checking his kit, he continued "Seeing as we just earned our 'freedom', I'd rather starve walking than just sitting here. Who knows how far we'll get, but some is better than none, especially if we can find some more substantial shelter."

The party started to break down the tents. Since the camels were already somewhat packed, breakdown didn't take much more that 20 minutes. They did burn about a quarter of a night's worth of fuel in the meantime. From there, it was more of a question of following the trail or any other thought the group may have.

While he waited for the others to finish packing, having had a head start, Alfbern did what he could to divine a few things about their situation.
((Direction Sense and Survival proficiencies just to get a sense of the situation. How much light is there from the moon and stars? Could they travel by that to preserve fuel?))
Once everyone was ready, Alfbern guided his camel down the trail and toward wherever it led.

Settling into the middle of the pack, Bit kept one hand firmly on the reins of his camel while his other hand rolled, flipped and spun one of his throwing daggers. He didn't trust the lumbering beast under him, but he trusted his surroundings even less.
((I'm assuming that all of the camels are docile after the ritual and willing mounts. That said, how much attention do they need while riding to keep them going / on the path?))

[Since most of the party has infravision, travel by the heavens shouldn't be too hard. This isn't a forest where you don't have a constellation as a guide to the general compass points. The mounts are docile enough for now, especially with the threat of becoming camel ham if they misbehave. As long as the party is wearing their normal clothing and armor, there should be limited need for fire. During the day, even in the shade, armor will be a difficulty.]
The faint trail extended south into the forlorn wasteland. No physical landmarks could be seen yet in the distance as they started to travel. Thorsan the Dwarf was going to be a liability as he could not keep up with the group unless he rode a camel. Hopefully this was not the case.
[Any last comments before you head out? Who's scouting, if anyone? Any other precautions taken?]

"I wouldn't have minded more time to rest; the daytime heat is so bad, I feel like we're starting out now without any rest. But...I guess that situation isn't going to get any better just sitting here.
"I recommend Alfbern, Am, and me continue to scout ahead as we go. We can stay about 60' ahead, just to keep a lookout for any encounters we might come on. Now...I guess it's time I armored up, in case we need it."
While Am the Goat waited at his side, Arristuun donned his magic scaled armor.

"We've all done nothing but lay in the back of a wagon for a month," Saskia said. "A few hours of lost sleep will not kill us."
After Alfbern and the ranger set out to scout, she plucked the hawk off her shoulder. "Follow them, Trancred. Make sure there are no hidden threats their clumsy, human eyes cannot see." Trancred screeched his reply and took off into the night sky.

Their first night passed uneventfully. As the sun began to show, Trancred the Hawk was first to notice something in the distance. From this far, and with the light, two dark slanting pillars could just be made out. Saskia felt it would be a good place to sit for a hawk. It would probably take an hour or two to walk that far, distances had a way of being misleading here.
Also, it was amazing how sand got everywhere. It was a fine, dusty grain that oft kicked into the air making random members of the party sneeze. Would they camp? Or perhaps push a bit further into the day to check out this new distraction?

Bithautor listened to the news of the pillars, shifting his weight to appease his aching legs and running his tongue over the damnable grit that had covered his teeth as soon as they began their trek. Spitting, he said to the air "I feel no need to slog on, now that the heat is coming on. Especially since we haven't gotten any good rest in a few weeks"

"Tancred has found something," Saskia said, breaking the silence of the march. "Let us brave the first couple hours of sun, while it is still cool. Perhaps we will find some measure of comfort there. Or at least something to break the tedium."
