In the midst of the vast desert sands, the last relic of a dead civilization stands before you. The great pyramid dominates your view while looking barely touched by time. As you approach you notice that the structure is surrounded by a wall, that from here, looks to be perhaps 20 feet tall. A temple-like building is attached to the south part of this wall. Behind the temple, running up the south face of the pyramid, a stairway rises up to a platform leading into the building.
The outlying buildings definitely could provide shade for rest. And the party was feeling quite exhausted.

Alfbern motioned for everyone to stop and then used his keen eyes to scan the outlying buildings and the area around the ruins for any signs of danger. And the last few days made him see almost everything as potentially dangerous.

Nothing could be seen as potentially dangerous (yet).

Bit was exhausted and the sight of shade moved him nearly to tears. He began to shuffle towards the nearest building that seemed large enough for the group. "What are the chances that an undead king would lead us into a trap, right?"

Osric piped up and patted Lucky strongly on the back. "Well, 'e did say that his tomb was burglar proof, lad. Me thinks there's more than enough tricks 'n traps within if ya git me drift."

Arristuun was not done searching the ruins yet. Although fatigued, thirsty (especially after too much talking!), and hungry, he pushed all that aside and scoured the ruins for tracks.

The ruins were in worse condition than the pyramid and the adjoining temple. Mostly clay and mud brick dwellings, some missing roofs or walls, they'd been emptied of any valuables long, long ago. Broken shards of pottery, sun bleached wooden beams and random broken mosaic patterns were common. As the sun started to creep ever higher into the morning sky there was one thing that was evident.
They were not alone.
Fresh tracks, camel and men, led towards the temple entrance. No life was seen yet. They were still a ways from the structure, and the first instinct was to hide behind some random wall lest their neighbors were not friendly.

Arristuun didn't think he had any strength left in him, but after hiding behind a structure for a minute, he managed to run back to the others.
"There are people here!" he said (not too loudly). "In the temple. Let's take maybe a two hour rest, if people need it, then go up and see if they're friendly or not. I, for one, would like something other than camel meat to eat."

"I'm all for that" Galatea chimed in. "I'm getting sick of camel and spider dinner."

"Friendly?" Alfbern shook his head to show his doubt of that possible outcome.

The party rested in an old shell of a building, perhaps once a stable, but now just some still solid walls with 3/4's of an old clay roof. Two hours was not enough time...
...especially since they had issues waking Thorsan & Osric. Even though they had hardy dwarven constitutions, they had to take 2 steps for every one that the elves took, and that apparently had taken a greater toll than anyone wanted to admit. They ended up resting closer to 4 hours before getting ready to explore any further.
Closer inspection of the temple entrance brought the following details to light.
1. An giant empty circular lime cement pool (about 100' in diameter) was seen immediately before the steps leading to the temple stairs and then entrance. On the south side of the pool a wide channel led through the center of the abandoned city.
2. Some movement could be seen in the temple entrance way to the right and left, suggesting guards of some sort. The entrance way was up a flight of stone stairs and flanked by giant columns. Galatea believed she could make out some light linen cloth or robe at one point, but the figures were keeping pretty well out of sight.
3. The pyramid was extremely large. It rose at least 700 feet into the sky and was lined in bright shining limestone, making it stand out as a gleaming beacon in the day light. It was easily the most impressive structure any of the motley crew had ever beheld. [To put this in real world dimensions, the Great Pyramid of Giza was 481 feet tall when it was built and currently sits at 455 feet tall.]

Alfbern took out his bow and made sure it was ready for battle. He stayed out of sight from the pyramid entrance but listened as his companions debated what to do.

"If'n we don't get outta this damnable sun soon..." Thorsan muttered. His voice was parched and raw with disuse, he hadn't spoken to anyone for days as they trekked through the heat. He never did well being above ground this long.

((I'm having some trouble envisioning the overall layout here. Can you scan or sketch out a map, Bob?))

www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207399628333684&set=gm.1671168523202455&type=3I was having difficulty posting pics to this board. Here is a link to the outside of the pyramid map. As you can see, the temple is attached to a wall that surrounds the pyramid. The empty pool is right before the temple entrance and the channel running south from the pool once provided water before the land was cursed. The party is located in an empty building to the right (east).
